I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart.

I am, I am, I am.

~ Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

We can’t control what people think, do, and say,  but we can control how we respond. The Prayer of Light is a simple tool you can use anywhere and any time you need an attitude adjustment.

This meditation may be challenging for some. I recommend preparing with a few cycles of the 15-Second Breath.

Once you have the Prayer of Light memorized, you can recite it however you like. I sometimes use it to close my Sadhana (daily spiritual practice) and during my workshops.

Love before me
Love behind me
Love at my left
Love at my right
Love above me
Love below me
Love unto me
Love in my surroundings
Love to all
Love to the Universe

Peace before me
Peace behind me
Peace at my left
Peace at my right
Peace above me
Peace below me
Peace unto me
Peace in my surroundings
Peace to all
Peace to the Universe

Light before me
Light behind me
Light at my left
Light at my right
Light above me
Light below me
Light unto me
Light in my surroundings
Light to all
Light to the Universe

The Prayer of Light was shared with me by one of my spiritual teachers, Joseph Michael Levry. You can learn more at Rootlight.com.

“May the long time sun shine upon you, all love surround you, and the pure light within you guide your way home” is the closing song of classes in the tradition of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan/3HO. It is adapted from the lyrics of “A Very Cellular Song” performed by The Incredible String Band and written by Mike Heron.

I am a KRI Level I Kundalini Yoga Instructor since 2005, trained under Gurucharan Khalsa, Guru Dharam Khalsa, Nirbhe Kaur, and Mahan Rishi Singh with additional studies in Naam Yoga under Joseph Michael Levry.

Breath is essential to life. It is the first thing we do when we are born and the last thing we do when we leave. In between that time, we take about half a billion breaths. What we may not realize is that the mind, body, and breath are intimately connected and can influence each other. Our breathing is influenced by our thoughts, and our thoughts and physiology can be influenced by our breath. Learning to breathe consciously and with awareness is the fourth limb of yoga, and it can be a valuable tool in helping to restore balance in the mind and body. The 15-second breath is a great practice for learning how to slow the breath down, and to eventually hold the breath for periods of time. It is an eventual lead up to the minute breath.
